Cars cars cars: What would you do?

The first line of defense from the Detroit car makers is that they make the cars that “The American People Want.” Realistically, that doesn’t make much sense since Detroit is in trouble because The American People have been buying foreign cars in increasing numbers for some years now. So should Detroit listen to the American People, we’d more likely have cars with the diversity that reflects the American landscape: small and efficient, large and full televisions, medium and very fast and so forth. Why not a car-like the cheap Tata from India? Strip it down and let the owners customize? A kind of iPod for drivers: seat covers, decals, new electronic gadgets could be purchased to personalize each car. It would be a boon to both car makers and dozens of aftermarket add-ons. We could keep the cars for ever, and upgrade the look, the accessories on a constant basis: blue this year, bright orange the next. My car, my fashion statement.
But seriously.
What would you do? If you were the GM of GM, what would you do?
